Our Firm History Diversity Recognition
We could not have done it alone.
Langrock Sperry & Wool was founded in 1960, growing from the solo practice of Peter Langrock to its current size, with nearly thirty lawyers practicing in two offices. A merger in 1982 with Michael Wool saw the firm expand from its original location in Middlebury, to offices in both Middlebury and Burlington.
Each office inhabits a historic building. In Middlebury, we occupy an 1801 Federal Style structure that has been expanded over the years to accommodate our growing numbers. In Burlington, we first had our offices in the Peck House, birthplace of Theodore Peck, one of Vermont’s Civil War heroes. In 2001, we relocated a couple of blocks closer to Church Street, where we now occupy two full floors of the 1830s Hall Block.
Over the years, current or former members of the firm have been selected for many posts in government service, including: Fred Parker, appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Vermont, and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; Ellen Mercer Fallon, Counsel to Governor Madeleine Kunin; Beth Robinson, appointed as a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court; Emily Joselson, Chair of the Vermont Human Rights Commission; Michael Wool, New England Board of Higher Education; and Peter Langrock and William Miller, Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. We’ve also pioneered the hiring and promotion of women, boasting among the highest percentage of female lawyers of the state’s largest law firms.
Known for our willingness to tackle complex, challenging—and sometimes unpopular—legal cases, the firm is highly regarded for the excellence and breadth of our professional work, the accessibility and collegiality of our lawyers, and our deep and long-standing commitment to important public issues affecting our state and our communities. From civil rights and environmental issues, to family law, construction and products liability, our cases have shaped Vermont law. But we could not have done it without you, our clients.
